Should non-contenders make trades at this point in the season with contenders?

Todd “Lord” Zola asked the experts in Tout Wars and LABR about their approaches in non-keeper leagues, and got an earful.

Read all about it at KFFL.com, here.

We took a look at last year’s August trades in Tout AL and NL, just to see what actually happened.

In the NL there were seven trades:

(6) traded Coghlan and U Jimenez to (9) Carlos Lee and Lannan

(6) traded Ryan Roberts to (13) Jon Niese

(8) traded W Venable to (3) L Nix and F Salas.

(12) traded Dee Gordon to (1) J Lyles and E Hinske

(8) traded Drew Stubbs to (3) Matt Cain

(9) trade L Morrison and M Martinez to (12) D Descalso and Tim Hudson

(9) traded L Duda and R Tejeda to (2) W Venable and M Martinez

In the AL there were eight trades:

(1) traded McCoy and Arencibia to (6) B Pena, Andino

(1) traded M Reynolds and D Lee to (7) McCoy and N Feliz.

(7) trades Slowey to (4) for B Allen.

(7) traded P Humbers and W Davis to (10) for D Murphy and N Feliz.

(3) traded Litsch, Aviles and Willingham to (6) D Jeter.

(1) traded H Matsi and T Sipp to (8) for J Cust and Nathan.

(1) traded Danks to (3) for A Ramirez.

(11) traded Adam Dunn to (7) for Alex Rios.

Nobody is claiming that any of these deals were unfair, and in fact Lord Zola was well out of first the last week of August, when he dealt with first place Larry Schechter in Tout AL. That might surprise you when you read Todd’s comments in the Roundtable linked above. But it shouldn’t. Despite all the different ways the Touts and LABRites have of saying it, the conclusion of everyone is pretty much the same: If you make a good trade you help your team, and that’s the goal always.

Nobody objects to that.
