Steve Gardner grew up with newsprint on his elbows from spending so much time reading box scores as a kid. But his love of baseball can be traced to the many nights he spent listening to Chuck Thompson and Jon Miller call Baltimore Orioles games on the radio.
The online baseball editor at USA TODAY for 10 years, Steve took over from John Hunt as Sports Weekly’s fantasy baseball columnist in 2006 and has served since then as the commissioner of USA TODAY Sports’ LABR experts leagues. He’s won three fantasy experts league titles in the last three years: LABR AL in 2010, Tout Wars NL in 2011 and the FSTA experts league in 2012. He now holds the title of Senior Fantasy Editor at USA TODAY Sports.

Why was WAR such a big topic when discussing MVP yet when talking about hall of fame, Al Trammel gets no love. I recently read Trammel/Whitaker hold the highest WAR for SS/2B combo in major league history.
Alan Trammell has better stats than hall of famers Pee Wee Reese, Phil Rizzuto and Ozzie Smith. The system is very flawed. Mickey Lolich has more wins and strikeouts than Don Drysdale. Lou Whitaker has much better stats than Bill Mazeroski. Dizzy Dean is in the hall of fame with 150 wins. There is nothing faiir about the hall of fame . If stats are not that important, how in the world can you leave Roger Maris out?
